Adam And Eve…And Lilith

A Contradiction in Terms.

Genesis 1:27- “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” You will notice that god creates man and woman AT THE SAME TIME and this woman’s name in never mentioned.

Let us now examine and consider the second verse, which is the contradictory and yet most well known story of the creation of man and woman.

Genesis 2:21-23-“21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman’, for she was taken out of man.”

This is the story most are familiar with known as “the rib story”. This woman is then named Eve, however she is NOT the FIRST woman and not the first wife of Adam.

Midrash Explained.

To find this out the name, Jewish scholars engaged in something called Midrash. Midrash, according to the Online Encarta Dictionary/Encyclopedia, is “commentary on Hebrew Bible: a body of Rabbinic literature consisting of commentary on and clarification of biblical texts, first compiled before 500 ad”. If that is not “authoritative” enough for you, according to the Oxford English Dictionary Midrash is, “A Rabbinic homiletic commentary on a text from the Hebrew Scriptures, characterized by non-literal ..nterpretation and legendary illustration.”

Why did they use Midrash?

Jewish Rabbis were not stupid. They understood that these two stories contradict each other. Since, Genesis is contained in the first five books of the bible known as “The Torah” and “The Five Books of Moses” and considered the most direct revelation from god to humans; the Rabbis decided this contradiction had an explanation that could get rid of the apparent contradiction. They did this by looking through the Bible (Old Testament) and looking for clues as to name of the first unnamed woman of creation. The reason, ironically enough, why the name of the woman is missing is because earlier Rabbis, those responsible for putting the Torah together didn’t like the story of the first woman, so they left the minimal amount of the story there, namely Gen 1:27. Why didn’t they like this first woman of creation? That will be explained later. First, let us look at what the Rabbis looked at during this Midrash.

Midrash Evidence

Isaiah 34:15 “…The night-demon Lilith, evil and rapacious, will establish permanent quarters. Scavenging carrion birds will breed and brood, infestations of ominous evil.” Here is mentioned Lilith, a woman-demon. They link this name up with a woman in Jewish lore known to them at the time but coming down to us through a medieval text known as The Alphabet of Ben Sira, in full text and explained later.

Why is this important?

According to ancient Jewish lore, known from a medieval text, based on lost texts of the same stories, known as The Alphabet of Ben Sira, Lilith is the unnamed wife in Gen 1:27. The story explains why the book was left out of the Pentateuch/Torah, how and why Lilith goes away, and is supposed to explain why babies die early, why men have wet dreams and as a way to demonize women.

The Alphabet of Ben Sira

The Story of Lilith

“The angels who are in charge of medicine: Snvi, Snsvi, and Smnglof. After God created Adam, who was alone, He said, ‘It is not good for man to be alone’ (Gen. 2:18). He then created a woman for Adam, from the earth, as He had created Adam himself, and called her Lilith. Adam and Lilith began to fight. She said, ‘I will not lie below,’ and he said, ‘I will not lie beneath you, but only on top. For you are fit only to be in the bottom position, while am to be in the superior one.’ Lilith responded, ‘We are equal to each other inasmuch as we were both created from the earth.’ But they would not listen to one another. When Lilith saw this, she pronounced the Ineffable Name and flew away into the air. Adam stood in prayer before his Creator: ‘Sovereign of the universe!’ he said, ‘the woman you gave me has run away.’ At once, the Holy One, blessed be He, sent these three angels to bring her back.

“Said the Holy One to Adam, ‘If she agrees to come back, fine. If not she must permit one hundred of her children to die every day.’ The angels left God and pursued Lilith, whom they overtook in the midst of the sea, in the mighty waters wherein the Egyptians were destined to drown. They told her God’s word, but she did not wish to return. The angels said, ‘We shall drown you in the sea.’

“‘Leave me!’ she said. ‘I was created only to cause sickness to infants. If the infant is male, I have dominion over him for eight days after his birth, and if female, for twenty days.’

“When the angels heard Lilith’s words, they insisted she go back. But she swore to them by the name of the living and eternal God: ‘Whenever I see you or your names or your forms in an amulet, I will have no power over that infant.’ She also agreed to have one hundred of her children die every day. Accordingly, every day one hundred demons perish, and for the same reason, we write the angels’ names on the amulets of young children. When Lilith sees their names, she remembers her oath, and the child recovers.”

Explanation for why Lilith is left out of the Torah

Lilith wanted to be equal with Adam, and gives good reason, according to the story. Adam did not want this and would not allow it, so she left him. This is quite feministic. She says, “I will not lie below”, during sex presumably and “We are equal to each other inasmuch as we were both created from the earth.” She is actually correct, in the sense that they are equals. This is disturbing to the early Rabbis of the Judaism. In the culture of the day, men we seen as superior to women and so having this idea in the bible was unacceptable, so it was discarded. She then leaves him by uttering the name of god (in Hebrew) and then she magically flies away and never seen again. Oddly, neither god nor his angels can bring her back to Earth. She then becomes a demon of night and roams the Earth causing havoc.

The Aftermath and Conclusion

Then we have the rib story, only after Lilith leaves, and Eve is purposely made out of something less than what Adam and was done so to insure that she would be subservient to Adam, and men in general. Eve is then the second wife of Adam and Lilith the first. Lilith’s story brings up one additional problem, one that may actually be worse than having two contradictory stories of creation that is; god- the omnipotent, omnipresent, and all-perfect, creator of the universe- is NOT perfect because he made a mistake. Not only did god make a mistake, he also did not see it coming (therefore not all knowing) and could not stop Lilith or control her (therefore not all-powerful). This is what one would expect from a “quick fix” explanation of a man-made myth touted by believers as the perfect word of the creator of the universe.

  1. “You will notice that god creates man and woman AT THE SAME TIME”

Maybe the English version leads that way, but the Hebrew, Greek and Latin versions are slightly different. They mean god created Adam (a human being) both male and female. What we would today call an hermaphrodite, but in the sense of being sex-less.

    Comment by sophismata | December 8, 2008

  2. If YOU’LL notice, I’m not claiming this argument in English, but in Biblical Hebrew, as evidenced by the FACT that Rabbis of the day are the ones that found this problem and thus created the story of Lilith. And their is no evidence outside of your personal interpretation for your claim what so ever. To further my point if that is in fact what is meant, why is it the passage refers them in the plural? If it is just a hermaphrodite Adam, it would be singular. Furthermore, why on earth would an all perfect being go through all the convolution?

Comment by Metro State Atheists | December 15, 2008

  3. This doesnt make any sense. Your claim for the sentence saying “at the same time” (as opposed to other translation) comes from “the rabbies of the day” finding this problem?

In Hebrew it doesnt say “man and woman at the same time”, it only says “male and female”, as in “masculine and feminine”. And the myth of Lilith, an incubus, is much older than the rabbis, goes all the way to sumerians.

  4. Well i have noted this… i have only made it to chapter six in genesis and already i am having difficulties understanding the time line.

There is little mention to the females in this book. It also fails to mention why the world was so corrupt that god had to destroy it. The only thing i have observed was the fact that angels had laid with human females. The results were “nephalim” Genisis 6:4. God puts a clause in human life that we will only live for one hundred and twenty years. And that has been defeated… According to the guiness book of world records Jeanne Calment has lived to be one hundred and twenty two years…

I apologize for swaying off of subject…

There is something totally wrong with the translation of the Bibles of today and i was failing to see how Cain found wife to lay with when the genealogy had only Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel. After Cain had murdered Abel that would leave his mother eve. so this Lillith story seems very plausible, but omitted for good reason… Cause god said man was to rule. Genisis 3:16…

Thanks for posting this one… i now have a lead to go on. I need more time to research this subject however.

  5. My Interpretation of Genesis. God says: “Do not eat from the tree of Knowledge of good and bad.” This is a strange tree. The fruit on this tree is knowledge. I am going to give you a few clues to get you on track to understand. Books are made from Trees. Books contain knowledge. What God is says is: “Do not eat from the Book of Knowledge of Good and Bad.”

Comment by Melanie Stephan | April 26, 2010

  6. The Book of Genesis is written by God himself. God talks in symbols and Genesis is full of them. That is Gods trade mark. Other parts of the Bible are written by other people and supposed to be inspired by God. Genesis is unlike other stories in the Bible. Here God has made up a story. In this story he is telling you exactly who the Serpent is. I correctly Interpreted Genesis in Gods own words. In the story of Adam and Eve, God is telling you the Serpent is the Roman Catholic Church. The Jews are right, they are still waiting for their Messiah. Jesus is not Yeshua. The Romans made up the New Testament. Jesus is not the prophet and Jesus is innocent.

  7. I start at Genesis 2:15

Gen 2:15 And God proceeded to take the man and settle him in the garden of Eden to cultivate it and to take care of it. 16 And God also laid this command upon the man: “From every tree of the garden you may eat to satisfaction. 17 But as for the tree of the knowledge of good and bad you must not eat from it, for in the day you eat from it you will positively die.”

God says you may not eat (digest, take-in) from the Book(tree) of knowledge of good and bad. What is the Book that God is talking about? Since I am reading from the Bible and the Bible is about good and bad, God is talking about the Bible.

Comment by Melanie Stephan | April 26, 2010

  8. Further on in Genesis 3:1 God tells you exactly who the serpent is.

Gen 3:1 Now the serpent proved to be the most cautious of all the wild beasts of the field that God had made. So it began to say to the woman: “Is it really so that God said you must not eat from every tree of the garden?” 2 At this the woman said to the serpent; “Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat. 3 But as for (eating) of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, God has said, “You must not eat from it, no. you must not touch it that you do not die.”

How do snakes deceive us? When we are out walking we think it is a stick. Then when we almost step on the stick, it moves. Here it says that the serpent is a beast. That statement is false. A serpent is a reptile. A beast is a mammal. So the serpent is really a mammal that talks and has characteristicts of a stick (part of a tree). God says it’s really a mammal. The only mammal that talks is Man. Now we know that the Serpent is a Man, who talks from the stick. The serpent is the Roman Catholic Church, the Church talks from the cross(stick).

Next: What is the fruit on this tree. What kind of fruit comes from the Bible? Jesus is nailed to the Tree. The “Tree Bears Jesus”. Jesus is the fruit on the tree. The fruit from the New Testament is Jesus. God says do not eat the fruit. Do not digest (Jesus) from the Tree (Bible)of knowledge of good and bad. Do not drink his blood(wine) or eat his body (bread)or you will die. Human sacrifice is a Pagan practice.

Comment by Melanie Stephan | April 26, 2010

  9. On this tree we have both good and bad fruit. Two different varieties on one tree. How is that possible? Trees can be grafted giving us two different varieties. The Bible (tree) is also grafted. The Old Testament (good)is grafted to the New Testamant (bad). We get both the good and the bad in one book. Two varieties all in one book.

Comment by Melanie Stephan | April 26, 2010

  10. Genesis 3:4 At this the serpent said to the woman: “You positively will not die. 5 For God knows that in the very day of your eating from it your eyes are bound to be opened and you are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad.”

The serpent is saying: “Take in (eat) Jesus (fruit) and you will not die. Does this sound familiar to you? In the NT Jesus says, “Believe in me and you will not die.”
How is this deceptive? Because the reader thinks that all they have to do is believe in Jesus and they won’t die. It also leads the reader to believe that people that don’t believe in Jesus are going to Hell. Which is false. The serpent isn’t lying, he’s deceiving Eve. In the next verse Eve eats from the tree and does not die. What that means:

The Church(serpent) is telling the Truth

Comment by Melanie Stephan | April 26, 2010

  11. I added my interpretation in italics in the following verses:

Genesis 3:5 For God knows that in the very day of your eating from it your eyes are bound to be opened and you are bound to be like God, knowing good and bad. 3:6 Consequently the woman saw that the tree (Book) was good for food (digesting) and that it was something to be longed for to the eyes, yes, the tree (book) was desirable to look upon, So she began taking of its fruit (Jesus) and eating it (up). Afterward she gave some also to her husband when with her and he began eating (reading) it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them became opened and they began to realize that they were naked (sinners). Hence they sewed fig leaves together and made loin coverings for themselves.

Everything that Satan (Roman Catholic Church) said to them happened just as he said it would. Their eyes became opened and the knew good from bad. Being naked is a sin.

    Comment by Melanie | April 26, 2010

  12. In the following verse it is clear that Adam and Eve are just children from their response to God. God is calling “Where are you”. Adam and Eve are hiding in the bushes naked. Adam finally talks from behind the shrubs:

Genesis 3:10 Finally he said: “Your voice I heard in the garden , but I was afraid because I was naked had sinned and so I hid myself.” 11 At that he said: “Who told you that you were naked (are a sinner)? From the tree (book) from which I commanded you not to eat have you eaten (ingested)?” 12 And the man went on to say: The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave [fruit] from the tree(book) and so I ate (read).” 13 With that God said to the woman: “What is this you have done?” To this the woman replied: “The serpent(church)–it deceived me and so I ate (read).”

Here are two children responding to their Father just like little children do. The Father asks: “What have you done”? Tommy says to his Father,”Sally gave it to me”.
Sally says: “The Dog talked me into it. Each passes the blame to someone else. Men take the blame for their own mistakes. Children pass it on to someome else. Now this is the reason why the Roman Catholic Pagan Church says Jesus had to die on the Cross. Jesus died for the original sin of Adam. The Church (Satan) says ‘Jesus died for you because of Adams sin’. Satan says God needs a human sacrifice (Jesus) because of Adams sin. The truth is we are all children. Adam and Eve were just infants. They are both still wearing their birthday day suits. This is their first day of life. They are new borns and they are behaving as children do. In the next verse God tells them they are going to have a hard life. He makes clothes for them and sends them from the garden.

Genesis 3:18 And thorns and thistles it will grow for you, and you must eat the vegetation of the field. 19 In the sweat of your face you will eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are and to dust you will return.”

God comes down hard on Adam and Eve. But God is talking in general to all of us. What goes for Adam and Eve also pertains to all of us. The some total of all of us are Adam and Eve. We are all Gods first born. Our destiny was written in Heaven before we ever left. God, our Father, put the tree in the center of the garden and he also created Satan. We new we would get into it. All of these things were meant to be because we have to learn about life the hard way. If we listened to our parents life wouldn’t be as hard but we don’t know how to listen. We don’t know how good it was until we know how bad it can get.

Jesus is the fruit of the New Testament. Books are made from trees.

  16. Melanie, the bible isn’t proof. To say that it is so is to use circular logic, which is fallacious.

    Sorry, try again.

Comment by Metro State Atheists | August 5, 2010

  17. Metro State Atheists,

Yes, it is proof. God wrote Genesis and he proved it. He told a story about the future. About 3 Thousand years before Jesus appears on the scene God is telling you what is going to happen. No one else can do that. Only God can do that. God knows that the ‘Church speaks from the Cross’ in the future. In Genesis God is telling you that, “The Snake speaks from the stick”. The Snake is the Church. The Cross is a Stick. When Genesis was written Jesus hadn’t suffered on the Tree yet. A Thousand years or so after Genesis was written Jesus was nailed to the cross.

This is a prophesy about the future written thousands of years ago. And the big point is that this prophesy came true today.

That is not fallacious. That’s pretty good proof. You don’t get it because your a hard core Atheist and Christains don’t get it because they are the hard core religious. Both groups, Atheists and Christains, are both hard wired. Both think they are right and everyone else is wrong.

All of you are wrong except Me and the Jews. I am not a Jew. I am a Gentile. We all have to cross over the line and admit that the Jews are right. They have been telling us that Jesus is not the Messiah, none of us listened. God says the Jews are right. God wrote it in the story about Adam and Eve. God tells us in very beginning of the book what is going to happen in the future.

    Comment by Melanie | August 7, 2010

  18. Genesis 1:27 and Genesis 2:21-23-”21 –
In Chapter 1 of Genesis God creates Man and Woman. Then again in Chapter 2 God tells another story about creation. The story about Adam and Eve is not about the first humans created. In Chapter 1 God has created Humans, there are already other people in the World when God tells the story about Adam and Eve. Otherwise there would be two first human creation stories.

Adam and Eve are representatives for all of us. They appear as the first named humans which means, “We all have things in common”. In many ways we are all the same. We don’t all share the same DNA, yet we all have a lot in common. We have a common heritage. Adam and Eve are the common link.

If Adam and Eve were the first humans, ‘Where did Cain find a wife?’ Cain leaves and finds a wife in another land because there are other people in the world. Cain did not marry his sister.

Now millions of people have read this story and none of them understood it. They all just skipped over the parts they didn’t understand. I read every single word in the story of Adam and Eve and I studied it just like I study Math or a Science book. I don’t skip over it until I understand it completely.

The first thing I see that does not make sense is the Tree of knowledge of good and bad. So I stop here and think about this one sentence for a long time. First I know knowledge does not grow on trees. Then I think what kind of Tree could this be? This is a strange Tree that bears knowledge. What I do know is that Books hold knowledge and Books are made from Trees. So, a Tree is a metaphor for a Book. Now I know God is talking in metaphors and symbols. So the rest of the story should follow the same rule of metaphors and symbols. I read on and the story fits into this same pattern. After I realize the Tree is really a Book every following verse falls right into place.

Now the rest of you couldn’t interpret Genesis correctly because your all afraid. Now I know I am right so I dont’ have any fear. In fact I know God is backing me up on this interpretation. Some of you are unsure and afraid of the Church or of God. I don’t know what kind of fears people have but it has kept them from seeing the TRUTH.

The TRUTH is that the Romans made up a story and grafted it just like a Tree to the Old Testament. So when you read the Bible your getting the good with the bad. Now the Jews don’t know the True Interpretation of Genesis any better than the rest of you, but they will tell you that the story about Jesus is made up. They are still waiting for their Messiah.

God says in Genesis, Don’t take in Jesus from the NT, it’s poison. Don’t eat from the Tree of good and bad, it’s posion.

  20. Prove god wrote the bible.

Comment by Metro State Atheists | August 8, 2010

  21. Metro, I can’t prove that God wrote the Bible, but I think I just proved that he did write Genesis. I continued interpreting Genesis into the story about Cain and Abel. In this story Cain and Abel are also representatives of all men in the same way Adam and Eve are. I start with their names. Cain and Abel sound exactly like Cane and Able. Then I go to the dictionary for the precise definition of the words Cane and Able. Cane is not as Able as his brother and is jealous of him. In Cain eyes he thinks that God looks down with favor on Able and not so much on him. That means Cain thinks God provides more to Abel than he provides for him.

The story about Cain and Able is about War. It is about brother killing brother and not about a sibling killing his sibling. The following verse tells us exactly what is really going on:

Genesis 4:8 After that Cain said to Abel his brother: [:Let us go over into the field.” ] so it came about that while they were in the field Cain proceeded to assault Abel his brother and kill him.

When Cain says to Abel, “Let us go over into the field”. What he means is, “Let’s go to the field of battle”. Now Able goes along because he knows that they have differences and they are going to settle their differences on the battle field.

Siblings murders are rare but War is not. This story is about War. This is what God has to say about War:

Genesis 4:9 Later on God said to Cain: “Where is Abel your brother?” and he said: “I do not know , am I my brother’s quardian?” 10 At this he said: “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground. 11 And now you are cursed in banishment from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood at your hand.

Cane has dissed Able. Cane does not care about his brother, it is of no concern to him. God then gives Cain a mark so that no one will kill him. There are other people in the world and Cain knows it. This is the mark that God gives to Cain.

‘Cane bears the mark of the Dis-Abled’

Cane is a wounded war veteran.

No one else knows what the mark of Cain is. I figured it out, cause I understand how God talks. (Note that Cain and Abel are translated from Hebrew and they both have names that sound exactly like other English words. And the words that sound the same, Cane and Able, give meaning to the story. I mean they fit perfectly into the story.) Is that a coincidence or is that proof?

By the way I did one Hell of a job in Cracking God’s Code. No one else could do it.

    Comment by Melanie | August 8, 2010

  22. Today I was thinking about the question: “What is the mark of Cain?” and I thought I should rephrase the answer to that question. Above I wrote “Cain bears the mark of the dis-abled.” Stating the answer a little differently makes more sense to me. This is it:
“Cane is the mark of the dis-abled”

I think that is what God was going for.
